So my husband just started watching Six Feet Under, which led me on a weird train of thought. Do you suppose it's possible for a corpse's joints to crack? Don't worry, I'm not planning on getting anywhere near dead bodies. It was just a random strange thought.

Dead Bodies?

RE: Severe joint cracking
I thought I cracked a lot, but you sound like you crack a lot more than I do. I noticed that the busier I am, the less I crack. Good luck.

RE: Favorite Video
Oh, wow, those were awesome. I wouldn't say I really like this one because it's a bit much and it looks scary to me. I just wanted to share how scary this looks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKRlN9vZQFQ

RE: A different way to crack your upper back/Neck
Yeah, I can do it on my husband, but he can't figure out how to do it on me! He's scared he's going to break me, so all I get is a slow, exaggerated neck and shoulder stretch.

RE: A different way to crack your upper back/Neck
I got it to work! It took a little adjusting because the first time I just overstretched the muscles. The motion should be small, and concentrated on the spine.

RE: Hey there :)
Welcome, you're not alone. I used to drive my husband nuts with it, but we've been married 14 years now, and he's used to it.

RE: I need your opinion on this procedure I wrote about cracking
I didn't get a pop, but it was a nice deep stretch that felt good.

RE: Idea.. kinda gross
My mom has an inversion table. I wonder if I could sneak over there with a vibrator. It would be very awkward if she came home early. lol

RE: I found a new way to crack my back.
Sounds nice! Do you do it when you're on top or bottom?

I found a new way to crack my back.
It started with a simple stretch. From a standing position, I bent forward and put my hands on the floor. After at least a full minute I felt my hamstrings and back relaxing and loosening, so I took my hands off the floor and held my opposite elbows with my hands, hanging over my head, toward the floor. I let my head get really heavy, pulling hard on my spine. There was no muscle involvement though. I basically let everything from the waist up go totally limp. Then I felt my spine gently separating and cracking, like it was getting longer. I felt like there might be a big crack in there, so I convinced my husband to push my back deeper into the stretch. I must have got about 15 small cracks like this. My husband said he could feel my spine separating, and it grossed him out, but it felt SO good. Next I talked him into doing it with one hand on my back, and the other on the back of my neck pushing firmly, but not too hard on the base of my head. I got the loudest booming crack ever right in the middle of my spine and I swear I stood up and I felt like was an inch taller than I had been.
It was the best feeling ever! Most of my knuckles need to be frequently recracked, but this one can go for a couple days before I feel like it needs it again.

RE: Pulling the spine to "pop" or "crack" it
This sounds very interesting. I'm trying to imagine what your partner is grabbing and pulling. Is it your skin or your spine? A video would be nice.

Time Warp on Discovery Channel
There is a new show called Time Warp. They do several segments per episode where they video tape something with a high speed camera, then watch it slowed down to see what really happens in excruciating detail. A few examples of things they've done include car wrecks, skateboarding tricks, and shooting an arrow through a soda can. Last week they did a high speed x-ray video of a hummingbird. We could see the bones and some fluid pockets in super-slow motion. That got me wondering if we could see a good neck or back crack in slow mo. I just wonder what it really looks like in there. I sent a suggestion to the shows website. If anyone would like to add a comment over there I'd appreciate it.
Here's the show's website:

RE: Results of over 10 years of popping
That sounds really scary. I'm sorry you're having such a bad time. I've been cracking a little longer than you, and I don't have any pain. Sometimes my back feels stiff, but I don't know if that's related to cracking or not. A good stretch or crack makes me feel better. If I try to not crack I feel that I will go crazy. However, that's my only really uncontrollable habit. I don't wash my hands 20x a day or have any other types of rituals. Still, I'm pretty sure it's an OCD type thing. I love the crack sound. Popping bubble wrap is also very satisfying to the part of me that likes that sound.

RE: The sacrum.
I LOVE when my sacrum pops. It rarely needs it though. I sit in a chair with sturdy arms. Put your hands on the chair arms, directly beside your shoulders. Use your arms to lift your body, but try to relax and keep your lower body like a dead weight. If the sacrum needs to pop this will do it. Also if you lean your head down while you're at it you get a nice stretchy feeling on the top of your spine and it will usually pop there too.

RE: Joint cracking over time
Yes. I mostly pop my back now, and even that isn't as much as it used to be. I used to do my fingers and toes, elbows and knees constantly. I still do them some, but I don't NEED it like used to. I actually think since posting on this site I don't feel the psychological need to pop as much. It seems like talking about it would make me do it more if anything, but it doesn't work that way.

RE: Jointcracking ruining a happy moment
Yeah, that would be annoying. I have a shoulder that pops when I do certain exercises like overhead press with weights. I have no control and it pops every time I press up, and it doesn't feel good. It's not a horrible feeling, but it doesn't release any pressure. It's just annoying. Fortunately I don't do that exercise all day long, so it's bearable. So I can see where you're coming from.
Blaze, we all know your opinion on chiropractors, but they are trained for many years and they are very knowledgable about the physical body. Bod, you might consider consulting a chiro for a professional opinion. Your spine might be out of line, causing the other joints to mess up too. I don't know enough about it to know what I'm talking about, but if I were to consult a professional, a chiropracter would be my first choice.
