I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I remember in High School someone produced a news story to me about a man who effectively broke his neck while twisting it. When I asked my doctor about it, she didn't know of such an event, but she did say that as a "cracker" herself, she doesn't twist her neck.

Joint Poppers… Democrat or Republican?
It's probably not appropriate to ask this, but everyone I know who compulsively pops/cracks is a democrat or leans left. Let's see if it's true…

RE: Shoulders and their awesomeness
Shoulder is absolute favorite for me, especially when combined with the neck!!
Here's how I do it:
1. Sit or stand with your back and neck in a very straight alignment (think of a soldier standing at attention).
2. Rotate both arms down and back and bring your hand behind your head as if you are being patted down by the fuzz.
3. Press right palm against head and press your head against it. At this point I get a super loud pop in my shoulder and 3-4 in my neck.
4. Press left palm agaisnt head and press your head against it. I get a small shoulder pop and 1-2 more neck cracks!
Once in awhile the sternum will go too, I did this in a meeting once and people thought it was insane!!

RE: Knee
I can do it too, I don't know why I like it so much, and it seems like a bad way to pop my knee's. My right knee is very loud!

RE: Lower back - technique suggestions?
I recommend leaning your lower back (where you need to pop) against your kitchen counter and leaning back until it pops. To get your right side to pop you could also try sitting in a chair looking forward and twising your upper body to the left, keeping your legs still.
Good luck, and be careful!
