after a long time of habitual cracking in my feet i find that by sitting with my otes and ankles immobile for at least a half hour(works better when feet are cold and/or after youve had a toke), more places on my foot will crack, and they are much more satisfying, than if i were to crack whenever i pleased, probably about every 10 min.

RE: Cracking in places where there is no joint
ill use some photoshopped pics to help here;
to crack the middle of my foot i press down on the top of the foot right above the toes. what i meant when i said it feels better when it cracks closer to the joint is that it would crack here;
(area indicated by black circle)
but most of the time I feel the crack occour closer to the toes, here;
it is not a 'click' which happens, it is defiantly an intense crack, happening where there is no joint.

Cracking in places where there is no joint
i can crack the middle of my foot. look at this diagram of the bones in your foot;
http://www.icbmedical.com/__data/page/104/Foot-Bone-Structure3.gifthe joint between the proximal phalanges and metatarsals seem to be the most commonly cracked on the foot, and what people refer to when saying they crack their toes. now if i put my palm on the middle of the foot and press down, i can crack the metatarsals. the closer to the actual joint the crack takes place the better it feels.
now here is the part that challanges some assumptions about joint cracking. when i crack the middle of my foot, most of the time the crack takes place right above the joint between the phalanges and metatarsals, where there is no joint!

RE: Sleep and cracking
i dont find hal pretentious at all.
i mean look at me, throwing around names like n,n-Dimethlytryptamine as if anyone here knows what that is or even how to pronounce it. look at me being so pretentious by assuming no one here has knowledge of hallucinogenic chemistry.
but why am I crazy, because I mentioned hallucinogens? this thread was not meant to be about drugs in any way, but i put forward the theory that there may be a chemical released during sleep that causes bones to crack more easily. Dimethltryptamine is a chemical released during sleep in your brain that I have ingested so can safely say that chemical has no bearing on bone cracking. That was the only reason I brought it up. -
RE: Sleep and cracking
sitting while awake isn't quite the same thing as lying while asleep is it?
I just meant sitting as a blanket term for inactive movement. I have laid in my bed for hours while awake without the increase in cracking that I get from just one hour of sleep.
And perhaps you are right about anti-inflammatory compounds, but cannabis does have an effect on the ability of joints to crack. I just wrote down anti inflammatory because it was the first effect of cannabis that has to do with joints.
But chemicals are released while we sleep, that is no over simplification. I'm just trying to find something that happens during sleep but not during periods of waking immobility, that can be tested, such as taking melatonin. It's very possible chemicals have nothing to do with the correlation between sleep and cracking, but it is something easily testable.
And if you don't like the subject of chems then let's discuss the correlation between cracking and sleep. Any causes you could think of?
and dont worry about sounding like a j**k or anything i do the same thing sometimes. its all good.

RE: Sleep and cracking
nope, i've tried sitting for long periods of time while awake. nothing. There are certain spots on my body, mainly my wrist and the middle of my left foot, that will not crack at any other time than right after I awaken. I've remained immobile for hours on end to no effect, and I've slept for a half hour and my slumbering joint cracking spirit was re-awakened.
And I'm not saying it's due to hallucinogenic chemicals, I don't think hallucinogenic chems have anything to do with joint cracking(except for cannabis, but that is due more to the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoid diterpines), I was just saying that there is a chemical released during sleep that I know has nothing to do with why my joints crack better after sleep, and that happens to be DMT. Melatonin is not hallucinogenic, melatonin is a hormone. It is also released during sleep. -
Sleep and cracking
anyone else notice an increased ability to crack all joints, and an ability to crack joints that during the day normally do not crack, immediately upon waking in the morning or from a nap? Perhaps there is some chemical released during sleep that causes increased cracking ability. It is not n,n-Dimethlytryptamine, a hallucinogenic chemical found in many plants and also in the pineal gland of the human brain. This chemical is thought to be released during dreaming. It is not this, I've taken it and noticed no extra cracking ability after the effects subside. The only other chemical that is easy to access and ingest that is known to be released during sleep is 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine(melatonin). I don't have any right now, does anyone have melatonin pills and can take them and note any increased cracking ability?
btw, if anyone is interested in seriously researching joint cracking, its causes, and the effects of endogenous and exogenous chemicals on the cracking process, pm me. this board seems too inactive to get any serious work done on the matter.

Cracking and euphoria
Does anyone else get euphoric effects from cracking bones? The bigger the crack the better I feel. Especially after a really hardcore back crack, I just slump over and feel incredibly relaxed, increased pleasurable tactile sensation, and euphoria.
Cracking my back also increases the effects of some drugs, like cannabis and opiates.
