An article titled "Knuckle cracking: key to a better life, or the road to a living h**l?" used to be on the cambridge university first aid society website. It has since disappeared but is still available in web archive:

      http://web.archive.org/web/20020212010144/http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/cufas/seriousarticles/knucklecracking.htm

It offers a useful summary of some of the (pretty limited) scientific research into knuckle cracking. You may want to link to it from an FAQ section or reproduce it on the site (check with the author first).

dabhand, thank you very much for the suggestion!

I did stumble upon the research from Ian York a while ago and already posted in detail about it in the thread labled Does Jointcracking lead to arthritis?

There is indeed lots of meat in his research. Alas, I have not found the time to follow-up on all the referenced papers yet.
